Genre:
3D Shooter Release Date: Late 2001
The action genre has
traditionally been plagued by anemic titles in
which the player must slash through level after
level without knowing why he/she has been sent
out to eliminate their adversaries. Every once in
a while there is a game that sets itself apart
from the rest of barbaric action titles of the
time, a game that is so unlike the rest that it
barely fits the criteria to be called an action
title, for the Xbox this game comes in the form
of Valkyrie Studios' Seraphim. The title looks to
change the stereotypical view of action video
games by pitting the player not only with the
task of beheading every single thing that moves
across the screen, but also with the task of
character management, skill point distribution,
and different clans in which the player can
enlist the character's talents. Level designs,
are yet another element in Seraphim that looks to
stray even further from the action genre norm.
The levels will actually have depth! I am as
amazed as you are. Level objectives include:
raiding human settlements, assonating enemy
leaders to throw the clan into disarray,
escorting vital materials, or the traditional
role of being the intricate part in a gigantic
battle. It is also said that, "The player's
performance determines the outcome not only of
the mission, but of the overall story as
well." By completing various mission
objectives the player earns skill points, by
using these various skill points the player can
attain new spells and better weapons as well as
improving upon original abilities such as flight,
spell casting, and the overall physical strength
of the character. Sound a little RPG-ish? It
should, the developer is attempting to make each
player's Seraphim as unique as possible. But why
is there a need to have different versions of the
same character? For multiplayer of course.
Seraphim will take full advantage of the Xbox's
online capabilities as it will offer capture the
flag, and king of the hill styles of play, as
well as various missions which you and your
buddies can attempt to complete. Of course along
with all of these multiplayer features there is
the classic death match option in which players
can import their single player characters and pit
them against others to see who's winged warlord
reigns almighty. With Seraphim Valkyrie Studios
looks to cross genres and bring an overall new
twist to the beleaguered action genre. Rest
assured that we'll bring you all available
information on this promising title in the coming
months.
